July 2008
Dear Friends,
Please
join After the Finish Line on August 19th for
A
Tribute to the Majesty of the Thoroughbreds. This is our
first annual Thoroughbred Racehorse Rescue Fundraiser. The event will be
held in Rancho Santa Fe, CA and will coincide with the Del Mar race
meet. Our event includes a reception, luncheon, speaker and silent and
live auctions. We are working hard to make this the
premier philanthropic event of the season. Our
fundraiser
invitation is posted on the home page of our
website. You can make a
monetary donation if you
are unable to attend.
If you are able to donate items or services for the silent or live auctions please contact me at dawn@afterthefinishline.org.. We will also gladly accept donated items from outside the state of California. We have already received several out of state auction items. Our donor contract and donor letter are also posted on the home page of our website.
July puts us in
the heart of the summer racing season from coast to coast. Please read our
website before you go to the
races. I hope it educates you about the social responsibility you can
participate in as a fan of the sport of racing. Not all Thoroughbreds are
supported by their barns when they are done racing or breeding. Throughout
the country there is heightened awareness regarding the fate of these
horses. After the Finish Line provides an alternative to slaughter.
After the Finish Line has already funded three rescue organizations in California, two rescues in Indiana and made two donations to the same rescue in Ohio. We also funded rescue organizations in New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Idaho, New Jersey, and Delaware. A donation of horse blankets was also given to a rescue in Washington State.
After the Finish Line is a 501 (c) (3) funding non-profit that supports Thoroughbred horses that can no longer race or breed. Caring individuals who want to rescue Thoroughbreds, yet don't know how, can do so by making their donations to After the Finish Line. We provide funding assistance to Thoroughbred rescue organizations in California and throughout the United States who care for and rehabilitate these horses until they are adopted for a non-racing career. The talented Thoroughbreds can be retrained as hunter/jumper, dressage, trail and companion horses.
After the
Finish Line will provide emergency funds for two more rescue organizations
this month. United Pegasus Foundation in California supports 66
Thoroughbreds that raced in California. As you can imagine, monthly expenses
for these champions are costly. After the Finish Line will assist UPF with
their hay expenses.
Karen Speake, founder
and President of Whimsical Horse Rescue in Delaware, suffered an
injury which requires her to rely on her staff to care for eleven
Thoroughbreds on a daily basis. Thankfully she will return to the barn in a
few months to take over the responsibilities. One of which is fundraising to
help pay the bills. After the Finish Line has known Karen for several years
and takes pride in saying she is a true friend of the Thoroughbreds. We will
provide funding for the medical attention her horses require as well as help
pay the ever increasing hay charges.
This month After the Finish Line is featured in California Riding Magazine and Thoroughbred Style magazine. We received both local and national press. After the Finish Line appreciates the support the media has given us.
Sincerely,
Dawn Mellen, President
After the Finish Line®
