August 2008

Dear Friends,

After the Finish Line is working hard to make their first fundraiser a success. A Tribute to the Majesty of the Thoroughbreds, our annual Thoroughbred Racehorse Rescue Fundraiser, will be held on August 19, 2008 in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. It is exciting to bring like minded people together who, until now, may not have known how to give back to the Thoroughbreds. This is your opportunity to share this experience with others. Our fundraiser invitation is posted on the home page of our website, www.afterthefinishline.org. If you missed the RSVP deadline you will still be able to attend the event. Please join us in honoring the Thoroughbreds.

After the Finish Line relies on the generosity of a national community of individuals, corporations and foundations to support our efforts to help the horses. Donate to satisfy your need to believe you can effect change to make a better life for the Thoroughbreds. Don’t be frustrated by a situation in which you feel powerless to control. No matter what amount you are able to contribute you will be part of accomplishing the goal of saving Thoroughbreds from slaughter. Your donations to After the Finish Line will give you hope for the horses.

This month two California rescue organizations were chosen to receive emergency funds.  You may have seen this situation in the racing publications and on the racing internet forums. Tranquility Farm in Tehachapi is currently working on rescuing 46 Thoroughbreds sold to a dealer in Arizona. These horses, both stallions and broodmares, came from a facility in Southern CA. Without funding Tranquility Farm would not be able to secure and transport these Thoroughbreds to safety. It’s hard enough rescuing one horse at one time let alone 46! We tip our hats to the effort, determination and success of Tranquility Farm.

The second recipient of After the Finish Line’s emergency funds is GEVA. Pam from GEVA concentrates her efforts on helping the Thoroughbreds coming off the Northern California racetracks. In June she was walking one of her horses when he suddenly collapsed on Pam breaking her leg. The horse passed away almost immediately. Pam requires funding for the daily expenses, upkeep of her rescue and care of her horses while her broken leg heals.

The press has been wonderful to After the Finish Line. Ranch and Coast magazine listed our fundraiser information in the SAVE THE DATE column of their July and August magazines. The Coast News, Rancho Santa Fe News and San Marcos News ran an article about After the Finish Line. In addition, the Rancho Santa Fe Record, The Del Mar Times and the Carmel Valley Leader also ran an article about us. And…the Presidio Sentinel gave us wonderful press. Thoroughbred Style magazine ran our full page ad and The Plaid Horse kindly ran an ad for us. We reached tens of thousands of readers through our August press.

Let me leave you with this beautiful story from a woman in Florida. Her seven year old daughter is the proud owner of an ex-racer named “The Event Planner” who came off of Tampa Bay Downs a couple of months ago. She tells me he is the kindest Thoroughbred she ever met. He is not high strung at all! His manners make him a real gentleman…a gentle giant at 16.2 hands. They believe his only fault was that he was just too slow to race. Her daughter actually rides him with spurs because he is a slowpoke. His trainer did the right thing and found him a new home when his racing career was over. “Event” will grow up with his young owner and be an awesome show horse.

Please join us at our first annual fundraiser on August 19 to honor the Thoroughbreds.

Sincerely,

dawn mellen
